Education

classroom-copySince the establishment of Sacred Land, we have given a substantial donation every year for education of the monks in Tengboche. As the traditional educational system is not supported by the government, Sacred Land opted to support the teachings, art and crafts and other endangered monastic skills.

Traditionally, monks and novices are trained in reading and writing, and also in the art of astrology, painting, mandala and Torma making, dancing, medicine and philosophy.

urgyen-copyThe school for the young monks used to be in Tengboche Monastery. However, because of the increasing expenses and distractions brought about by the rapid expanse of tourism, the school was moved to Darjeeing, where there is a strong Sherpa community. The senior monks still stay in Tengboche to study philospy and continue the ceremonies.

Over the years Sacred Land has contributed to all different aspects of education, including paying for teachers and books. With your help we hope to be able to continue this in the future
